(In a Covid-19 context. Online chat.)
“You know, we all know. One day this’ll be over. I’d bet good money there’ll be three big legacies from Covid.
“Look, I’m only human. And the basic human cost is horrible. God knows, I know that. You know I know that – first hand and second hand.
“But beyond the deaths, two things keep me awake. We all know there’s a huge cost, economic cost. The numbers are too big to get your head round but it’s not about numbers. Not really. It’s going to impact people – people like you and me and most others too. And that’s going to go on for years. Decades. God knows how that’ll pan out.
“The third? The third’s the legal rights and human rights that have been trashed in the name of fighting Covid.
“They’ve bred such a horrible atmosphere of fear. A culture of fear. They’re getting away with doing whatever they like almost, and you’re not hearing much about it.
“Even senior judges are worrying about it, and they know what’s going on. You know, this sort-of worries me the most. It will be so, so hard to undo. And fear’s a powerful weapon. If anyone tries to revive the rights we’ve lost I worry they’ll just be breathing air into a well-cold corpse.”
