(A walk with a friend between Christmas and New Year)
“What d’you reckon? Pretty well everyone we’re walking by … that couple just then, that family of four earlier … they’re all saying ‘Happy Christmas’ to us. And we don’t know them from bloomin’ Adam. And these are people who’d normally just walk by without a word.
“And it was the same when I was out on my tod the other day. And you know it’ll be the same sort of thing come New Year’s.
“And? And, well, I was thinking, all these good wishes are nice and all that, but why do we have to save them up for just a couple of days every year? I mean, even if we think, you know, pleasant enough thoughts when we walk by strangers, wouldn’t it be better if we actually said something?”
